During their expedition, they encountered a fascinating jellyfish, known as the red helmet jellyfish, whose tentacles unfurl like delicate shoelaces in the water's depths.
This stunning marine animal, scientifically named Periphylla periphylla, is frequently spotted in sizable groups, particularly in the fjords of Norway. A representative from OceanX shared insights about this jellyfish, noting its remarkable ability to glow in the dark, a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. This intriguing quality adds to the jellyfish's allure, making it a captivating subject for researchers and enthusiasts alike.
"Throughout our explorations, we documented the presence of these jellyfish at various depths in both Masfjorden and Sognefjorden," the spokesperson elaborated.
As reported by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), the red helmet jellyfish thrives in the deep, shadowy regions of the ocean. "If you’ve never had the chance to observe a helmet jellyfish up close, you’re certainly not alone; it’s one of the rare jellyfish that predominantly resides in what is termed the ocean's twilight zone," WHOI explains on their website.
These jellyfish possess a unique red pigment that is sensitive to light, prompting them to shun sunlight entirely. Instead, they prefer the cooler, sunless depths of the ocean where they can evade the harmful effects of UV rays.
In addition to the red helmet jellyfish, the ocean teems with other astonishing marine life. For instance, witnesses have described encounters with imposing tiger sharks that seem as massive as trucks, while divers have stumbled upon peculiar creatures emerging from the darkness during night dives. The wonders of the ocean are endless, with scientists capturing unbelievable footage of turtles outfitted with cameras, showcasing the vibrant underwater world in ways never seen before.
