A pristine copy of Action Comics No. 1, the very comic that introduced Superman to the world, has been sold for a jaw-dropping $15 million (£11.2 million). This sale isn't just about the money; it's a testament to the enduring power of a superhero and the allure of collecting.
This particular copy has a truly remarkable story. It was once famously stolen from the collection of actor Nicolas Cage and later recovered. The sale, shrouded in anonymity, was announced on a recent Friday, adding an extra layer of mystique to this already legendary item.
But here's where it gets truly astonishing: this sale dwarfs all previous comic book records. The previous high watermark was set just last November, when another Action Comics No. 1 sold for $9.12 million at auction. To put things in perspective, these comics originally sold for a mere 10 cents – the equivalent of about $2.25 today!
Action Comics No. 1, published in 1938, is more than just a comic book; it's a cornerstone of the superhero genre. It introduced the world to Superman and helped define the archetypes we still see today. Experts estimate that fewer than 100 copies of this iconic comic still exist, making each one a priceless treasure.
The recent sale was brokered by Metropolis Collectibles/Comic Connect, based in New York. Both the seller and the buyer have chosen to remain anonymous, adding to the intrigue.
This particular copy received a near-perfect grade of 9 out of 10 from the Certified Guaranty Company, a specialist in authenticating collectibles. This high grade makes it one of the most well-preserved copies in existence, further boosting its value.
And this is the part most people miss... the comic's connection to Nicolas Cage significantly increased its value. The Con Air and National Treasure star originally purchased this copy in 1996 for $150,000 – a record at the time.
However, the comic was stolen during a party at Cage's home in 2000 and only resurfaced in 2011, found in a storage unit in California. As Stephen Fishler, CEO of Metropolis/ComicConnect, pointed out, "During that 11-year period, it skyrocketed in value. The thief made Nicolas Cage a lot of money by stealing it."
Cage was reunited with his prized possession and, just six months later, sold it at auction for $2.2 million.
Fishler draws a compelling comparison to the theft of Leonardo Da Vinci's Mona Lisa from the Louvre Museum in 1911. The theft transformed the painting from a relatively unknown work into a global icon. He believes the same is true for Action Comics No. 1, calling it "an icon of American pop culture."
