Sunway Square Mall opens its doors with 95% of its retail spaces active
PETALING JAYA (Dec 12) – Sunway Malls, the retail arm of Sunway Bhd, has officially unveiled Sunway Square Mall this past Friday.
The four-story complex spans 320,000 square feet, houses 130 shops, and provides 3,000 integrated parking bays. Sunway Square Mall is fully leased, with 95% of the storefronts currently operating.
Major anchors include Village Grocer, BUMP Bouldering, The Library by BookXcess, TGV Cinemas, KKV, COUNT, and Tutu Toe Dance Academy. The mall has welcomed the public since December 11.
At the opening ceremony, Sunway Malls chief executive HC Chan noted, “Sunway Square Mall marks a milestone for us, expanding our nationwide portfolio to 11 malls in Malaysia, surpassing the ten-mall threshold for the first time.” He added that the design prioritizes leisure, entertainment, and food and beverage experiences.
A key insight shaping the project was the observed resilience of out-of-home dining even after the pandemic. As a result, Sunway Square Mall dedicates a larger footprint to F&B, now occupying 54% of the lots and 36% of the net lettable area, significantly above the national mall average.
Sunway Square Mall is part of the broader RM1.8 billion Sunway Square mixed-use development in Sunway City, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor. This 2.3 million square foot project includes Sunway Square Mall, Sunway Square Corporate Towers, an extension of Sunway University, and the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre.
The Sunway Square Corporate Towers total around one million square feet, consisting of Tower 1 with 21 office floors and Tower 2 with 23. These Grade A offices carry LEED Gold and GreenRE Platinum certifications.
Sunway University spans 700,000 square feet as an extension of the existing campus, with capacity for more than 8,000 students. It will host the School of Arts and the School of Business.
The Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre will feature proscenium and experimental theatres capable of seating up to 1,200 attendees.
During the same event, Chan provided an update on Sunway Malls’ portfolio. He shared that in 2025, renovations and fittings were completed for 500 shops across all malls, totaling over one million square feet of refreshed retail space—an indicator of strong and sustained demand for Sunway’s quality retail environments.
Sunway Malls now operates 11 centers: Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity, Sunway Carnival, Sunway Putra, Sunway Big Box, Sunway 163, Sunway Kluang, Sunway Giza, Sunway Wangsawalk, Sunway Citrine, and Sunway Square. Planned openings include Sunway Ipoh (Q4 2027), Sunway Pier in Port Klang (Q1 2028), Sunway Seremban Sentral (2028), and Sunway RTS in Johor Bahru (2029).
“We aim to expand the Sunway Malls brand to 15 locations in the near term, enhancing the mall experience across key Malaysian markets,” Chan stated.
