Saint Martin's Island: A Paradise with a Catch
Today marks the reopening of Saint Martin's Island, Bangladesh's sole coral island, to tourists. However, this paradise comes with a twist. While the island welcomes visitors, overnight stays are off-limits this month, and ship operators have no plans to resume services until December.
The Catch-22 of Tourism
The government's decision to allow tourist travel only from November to January has created a unique dilemma. Visitors must return to Cox's Bazar on the same day in November, discouraging many from embarking on the lengthy sea journey. Ship operators, faced with a lack of demand, have no choice but to keep their vessels idle.
Hossain Islam, representing the Sea Cruise Operator Owners Association of Bangladesh, explains, "We're ready to sail in December and January, but November is a no-go due to the absence of tourists."
A Season of Restrictions
The government's latest decision shortens the tourist season to just three months and imposes strict conditions. A maximum of 2,000 tourists per day is permitted, subject to 12 specific directives. These directives include online ticket purchases with QR codes and a ban on overnight stays in November.
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has issued strict guidelines, with no vessel allowed to operate without approval from the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and the Ministry.
Environmental Protection vs. Tourism
The government's environmental protection efforts are evident in the visitor rules. Fires on the beach, loud noises, and barbecue parties are prohibited. Visitors are also forbidden from entering the Keora forests, collecting or trading Keora fruit, or harming sea turtles, corals, and other marine life.
Motorized vehicles are banned on the beach, and carrying single-use plastics is prohibited. Tourists are encouraged to bring reusable water flasks.
Md Abdul Mannan, Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazar, emphasizes the strict enforcement of these directives to protect the island's biodiversity.
The Impact on Local Businesses
The restriction on overnight stays in November has sparked concerns among local business owners. Nur Mohammad, vice-president of the Saint Martin's Shop Owners Association, highlights the impact on local investment and livelihoods, stating, "With no overnight stays, shops are closing, and business is suffering."
Shiblul Azam Koreshi, President of the Saint Martin's Hotel-Resort Owners Association, adds, "While we support environmental protection, a thriving tourism industry requires a balanced approach that considers the needs of investors and island residents."
