PDP Convention Ban: Wike Rejects Oyo Court Ruling Amidst Internal Crisis (2026)

The political landscape in Nigeria is heating up, and the drama is unfolding! A legal battle over the PDP's convention has taken an intriguing turn, leaving many wondering who holds the power to decide the party's fate.

The story begins with a bold move by Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who has vehemently rejected an Oyo State High Court ruling. This ruling, made on Tuesday, approved the PDP's national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan. But here's where it gets controversial: this decision directly contradicts a recent judgment by the Federal High Court in Abuja, which prohibited the PDP from holding the convention.

Justice Ladiran Akintola's ruling on the ex parte motion (filed by Folahan Adelabi) seemed to favor the PDP's plans, but it's not that simple. Justice James Omotosho's judgment in Abuja, delivered in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, ordered the convention to be halted until the PDP adheres to its constitution, the Nigerian Constitution, and the Electoral Act. This judgment was a response to a suit filed by three disgruntled PDP members, including Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Abraham Nnanna, and Turnah Alabh George.

Justice Omotosho's instructions were clear: the PDP must get its house in order and provide the required 21-day notice to INEC before proceeding with the convention. He also warned INEC against recognizing any convention outcomes that don't follow due process and regulations.

In the Oyo case, the defendants include the PDP, its National Chairman Umar Damagum, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and the Independent National Electoral Commission. Justice Akintola granted the claimant's requests, preventing the defendants from interfering with the planned convention.

But wait, there's more! Wike, through his Senior Special Assistant Lere Olayinka, dismissed the Oyo order, claiming the Abuja judgment takes precedence. He questioned the validity of an ex parte order, which typically lasts for a short period, and emphasized the authority of the Federal High Court's judgment.

As if that wasn't enough, the PDP is also facing internal struggles. Umar Damagum, the factional National Chairman, has taken action against former members of the National Working Committee, including the suspended National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu. This move has sparked further controversy within the party.

On a related note, the PDP's Deputy National Chairman, Mohammed Abdulrahman, backed by Wike, has assumed the role of acting national chairman. Abdulrahman promises to empower the people, but the party's internal conflicts persist.

And this is the part most people miss: the blame game has begun. Timothy Osadolor, the Deputy National Youth Leader of the PDP, pointed fingers at the party's governors, excluding Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, for the ongoing crisis. He accused them of poor leadership and creating confusion within the party.

Osadolor defended Anyanwu's suspension, claiming it was invalid due to procedural errors. He praised Damagum's leadership but argued that the governors' interference has caused turmoil. The question remains: can the PDP find a way out of this mess, and who will ultimately hold the reins of power?

What do you think? Is Wike's dismissal of the Oyo order justified? Should the PDP's governors be held accountable for the party's internal struggles? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and let's keep the conversation going!
