The university found that while the study didn't involve invasive methods like blood sampling, it included 19-year-old college freshmen who participated without the necessary consent forms from their legal guardians. This constituted a clear breach of research ethics.
After a thorough review by the university-level committee on academic ethics, NTNU decided to revoke Chou's degree, in accordance with its regulations. These regulations stipulate that degrees can be revoked if major violations of academic ethics or integrity are found.
Here's a crucial detail: While Taiwan's Civil Code now defines adulthood as 18 years or older (revised in 2023), the legal age of adulthood was 20 when Chou conducted her research. This adds another layer of complexity to the situation.
