Mysterious Red Halo Appears Over Italian Town AGAIN! ELVEs Explained (2025)

Mysterious Red Halo Returns Over Italian Town, Sparking UFO Theories

For the second time in three years, a peculiar phenomenon has captivated residents of a small Italian town nestled in the Alps. On November 17, around 10:45 local time, nature photographer Valter Binotto captured a bizarre UFO-like glow, a rare sight that has left scientists and locals alike intrigued. The halo, estimated to be 200 kilometers across and hovering at an altitude of 100 kilometers, bears a striking resemblance to an earlier sighting in March 2023 at the same location in Possagno, a town of approximately 2,200 people in northern Italy.

Binotto, the photographer, explains that these halos are not extraterrestrial in origin but rather a fascinating atmospheric phenomenon known as ELVEs (Emission of Light and Very Low-Frequency Perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources). These rings are expanding rings of light that form in the lower ionosphere above large thunderstorms, triggered by the electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from a lightning strike. They are short-lived, lasting only a millisecond, making them challenging to observe without modern equipment.

According to Binotto, the red ring marks the spot where the EMP hit Earth's ionosphere, releasing an electrical current of approximately 303 kilo-amperes, which is significantly higher than the average thunderstorm discharge. This intense current is what creates the captivating glow.

NASA, which first discovered these glowing rings in the 1990s, categorizes ELVEs as part of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs). These TLEs are colorful, bright, and faster than lightning, appearing above clouds and taking various fanciful shapes. On Earth, ELVEs appear reddish due to their interaction with nitrogen in the upper atmosphere, while on planets like Jupiter, they can be blue or pink.

The recent sighting in Possagno has sparked curiosity and speculation, with some residents wondering if it could be related to extraterrestrial activity. However, Binotto assures that ELVEs are a natural phenomenon, and the second sighting in such a short time is statistically unlikely. The mystery remains, leaving scientists and enthusiasts eager to uncover more about these transient luminous events.
