Michelin Stars Coming to Philly! Predictions & What It Means (2025)

The Great Philly Food Mystery: Unveiling Michelin's Starry Secrets

Get ready for a culinary adventure as Philadelphia gears up for its inaugural Michelin Guide! On November 18th, the city will be abuzz with anticipation as the 2025 Michelin Guide Northeast Cities Ceremony takes center stage at the Kimmel Center. But here's where it gets intriguing: Philly is not alone in this gastronomic journey. Boston, too, is set to receive its very first Michelin Guide, adding to the excitement.

"Philadelphia, a beacon of hospitality, will honor the Northeast's culinary prowess," says Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guide. "These cities, including Boston, Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C., are culinary powerhouses, each with its own unique flavor and talent."

The famous Michelin inspectors have been hard at work in Philly, scrutinizing restaurants and deciding which establishments deserve the prestigious red star. For those unfamiliar, the Michelin star system is a culinary ranking system that's as mysterious as it is coveted. One red star (⭐) signifies a very good restaurant, two (⭐⭐) indicate an excellent restaurant worth traveling for, and three (⭐⭐⭐) is the pinnacle, reserved for exceptional dining experiences.

Currently, only 16 restaurants in the United States have achieved the three-star status, making it a highly competitive and exclusive club.

So, who will Michelin crown as the star-worthy establishments in Philly? Any restaurant in the city is eligible, which means upscale favorites like Zahav, Royal Sushi and Izakaya, or Friday, Saturday, Sunday, could be in the running. But here's the twist: even local gems like South Philly Barbacoa or Angelo's could potentially earn a star. It's a level playing field, and the anticipation is palpable.

Gregg Caren, president, and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, calls the new Michelin guide "a milestone years in the making." Hosting the ceremony at the iconic Kimmel Center adds to the excitement, as Philly's restaurants will earn their first Michelin accolades right in their own backyard.

We've also had the pleasure of chatting with Poullennec about his insights into the Philly food scene and the covert Michelin inspectors who've been flying into the city.

The outcome of Tuesday night's ceremony will write a new chapter in Philly's food history. And let's keep our fingers crossed for more red stars for Philly than Boston! Who will earn the stars? Only time will tell.
