When disaster strikes, the true spirit of community shines brightest. This is the story of Mexican surfer Sebastian Williams and the global surfing community, who rallied together to help the remote village of Chacahua after Hurricane Erick devastated their homes. It's a testament to the power of human connection, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.
In an interview with Olympics.com, Williams shared his experience weathering the Category 3 Hurricane Erick and how the surfing community transformed a disaster into an opportunity for hope and resilience. The devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica on October 28th mirrored the destruction Williams witnessed in his childhood home of Chacahua. His phone was filled with images of the aftermath: roofs ripped apart, trees uprooted, and streets covered in debris.
Williams' own home suffered significant damage. The roof was torn away, the wooden deck collapsed, and their well was contaminated with saltwater and debris, cutting off their fresh water supply. But the most terrifying moment was when his mother, Dalia, was trapped inside as the storm raged. She bravely salvaged family mementos while the ocean surged towards the front door.
But here's where it gets controversial... the storm also brought feelings of hope. In the weeks following the hurricane, Williams and surfers from around the globe united to aid the recovery efforts in Chacahua, proving that the strongest character traits often emerge during times of crisis. Williams expressed his lack of surprise at the community's response, stating, "I know that the people of the community felt so much love that it really empowered them to push through this tough time and we're very happy to see how many people came together."
A Hidden Gem:
Laguna de Chacahua is a secluded Mexican village, a place where life is simple, and the community thrives. It's a place that might have remained unknown, if not for one key detail: a world-class right-handed wave that attracts surfers from all over the globe. Williams learned to surf there and frequently returns to visit his mother.
On June 20th, Hurricane Erick struck the Pacific coast of Mexico. Williams, his girlfriend Leila, and their two-year-old daughter Lynne were in the area. Initially, they anticipated the hurricane would hit Puerto Escondido. However, the storm unexpectedly shifted course, unleashing its full fury on Chacahua while they slept.
Williams recalled the phone call he received the next morning. His mother, shaken but safe, informed him that their home was damaged, but everyone was alive. The storm had left Chacahua in ruins, with homes destroyed and streets impassable.
Williams immediately drove to Chacahua to assess the damage and offer assistance. His mother was unharmed but traumatized. While their home was still standing, the roof was gone, and debris littered the property. "Even the ocean made its way into our home," Williams said. "My mom was there at the front and she fought against the wind and the waves and she just took everything that's important to us and stored it and kept it for safekeeping."
The hurricane impacted every home and street in the community of 300 people. Roads were flooded, trees fell, and many were left without shelter, food, or clean water.
The Surfing Community's Response:
Williams was among the first to help with the cleanup. With the support of the government and organizations like World Central Kitchen and Techo México, they delivered essential supplies to the village. Surfers worldwide also stepped up to support the community. Williams and Greg Long initiated a GoFundMe page, which, as of early November, had raised nearly $17,000. The donors, from Japan to Germany, showed how much Chacahua is loved globally.
The community's response was incredible. "They've come back very well because within the first few days, they felt so much love from so many people that they knew that they would get through it," Williams said.
And this is the part most people miss...The primary goal of the GoFundMe donations was to rebuild the community kitchen. With the fundraising goal exceeded, Williams envisions even more ambitious projects to benefit the community year-round.
"We're going to amplify it, and we’re not only going to build the community kitchen and be like, ‘OK, now we're ready for another natural disaster’. We're actually going to make it used as a library or for projects. We'd like to give it a daily use."
Williams is proud of the ongoing efforts, stating, "It's something that will be with me forever and it will be there forever too, for future generations, so I'm very proud."
