A Bold Vision for Respiratory Health: Makerere University's Lung Institute Expansion
Breathing new life into respiratory health research and care in Uganda and beyond
As the Makerere University Lung Institute (MLI) gears up to celebrate a decade of impact, an exciting development is unfolding. The Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, has officially handed over the construction site for a groundbreaking expansion of the Lung Institute's facilities.

The new Lung Institute complex, a six-level facility to be constructed at Mulago, promises to revolutionize respiratory health research, care, and training. With a price tag of UGX 3.6 billion, the first phase of this ambitious project will be undertaken by CK Associates, on land generously provided by Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Speaking at the handover event, Prof. Nawangwe praised Mulago Hospital for their partnership, describing it as a reinforcement of a long-standing collaboration. He highlighted the Lung Institute's vital role in Uganda's health sector, especially post-COVID-19, and emphasized the need for support to address respiratory illnesses that have claimed many lives.
Prof. Charles Ibingira, Chairperson of the MLI Board, shared his vision for the upcoming facility. It will house a state-of-the-art Pulmonary Care Centre, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and dedicated spaces for human resource development and specialized lung health services. This expansion aims to elevate the Institute's capabilities and position it as a regional leader in lung health.
MLI Director, Prof. Bruce Kirenga, shed light on the Institute's growing research capacity, despite current space constraints. He proudly mentioned that MLI operates the second-largest cold room in Uganda, a -80°C facility capable of storing 2300cc of clinical and research materials. Prof. Kirenga expressed gratitude for the allocated space and highlighted the ongoing collaboration with Mulago Hospital through a memorandum of understanding.
Dr. Rosemary Byanyima, Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital, commended the Lung Institute's investments in clinical research and trials. She emphasized the transformative impact of such initiatives on respiratory health care in Uganda.
The handover event marks a new chapter for the Makerere University Lung Institute, aligning perfectly with its 10-year anniversary celebrations.
