Joel Embiid's Return: 'Good Step' After Injury in 76ers vs Hawks Double OT Thriller (2026)

Joel Embiid Calls His Comeback a 'Good Step' — But Was It Enough for the 76ers?

Joel Embiid made his long-awaited return to the court, taking what he described as "a good step" toward full recovery after weeks of injury frustration. But while fans were thrilled to see him back in action, the night didn’t end quite how the Philadelphia 76ers hoped — especially after a grueling battle that stretched into double overtime.

Embiid stepped onto the hardwood for the first time in 10 games, following three weeks on the sidelines due to right knee soreness. His comeback came during Sunday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks at Wells Fargo Center, a game that ended in a high-scoring 142-134 loss for the Sixers.

Even so, there were plenty of reasons for optimism. The reigning MVP logged a season-high 30 minutes, racking up 18 points while going six-for-14 from the field. Considering his limited time on the court over the past month, that’s a solid return.

“I felt pretty good in the first half,” Embiid said after the game. “When you’ve only practiced a couple of times after almost a month away, your legs need time to catch up. It takes a bit to find your rhythm again.”

He added that his performance wasn’t about his shooting accuracy but about how well his body responded: “For me, it’s about how I’m moving — laterally, jumping, staying balanced. Tonight was definitely a positive step in that direction.”

But here’s where it gets controversial. Can the Sixers afford a slow, cautious build-up from their franchise player in such a competitive Eastern Conference? Or does Embiid need to take bigger risks sooner to get back to dominance?

On the flip side, Atlanta walked away celebrating. Jalen Johnson dropped an impressive 41 points — a career-high — guiding the Hawks to victory in an intense double-overtime showdown.

“It was more about perseverance than poise,” Atlanta head coach Quin Snyder remarked. “When we lost focus or made mistakes, we didn’t let it stick with us. We just kept fighting, and that’s what won us the game.”

Embiid’s return was a bright moment for Philly fans craving some hope after a tough stretch, but the bigger question remains: will this “good step” be enough to spark a turnaround for the Sixers — or is the team still walking uphill?

What do you think? Should Embiid take his time easing back into form, or should he push harder to get the 76ers back in contention? Share your thoughts below — fans are already split on this one!
