Allison, a resident of Donnington in Shropshire, first learned of her health struggles in 2011 when she was diagnosed with Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP), a condition that led to stage 3 chronic kidney disease. This diagnosis cast a shadow over her life, but her husband, Darren, was determined to find a solution.
Fast forward a decade, and the need for a transplant became clear. For Darren to be a suitable donor, he needed to reach a healthy weight. This meant he had to lose a significant amount of weight – a total of four stone (approximately 25.5kg). Imagine the dedication and discipline required for such a feat, all driven by love!
And this is the part most people miss: Darren's journey wasn't without its own hurdles. Just as the transplant plans were solidifying, he was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome, a heart condition characterized by a very fast heartbeat. This could have easily derailed the entire process, but thankfully, it was managed.
Six months ago, the day finally arrived. Darren successfully donated his kidney to Allison, and the transplant was a resounding success! Allison shared her overwhelming emotions, stating, "As our operations approached, I felt so emotional about it but Darren never thought twice about it." She described his act as "such a selfless act" and expressed her deep gratitude, feeling "like the luckiest person to have such a loving husband."
The complex surgery was performed by a dedicated team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, marking a significant milestone for the trust as their 5000th transplant. Dilan Dabre, a consultant renal transplant surgeon at UHB, expressed his pride in being part of this landmark procedure.
Both Allison and Darren are recovering well. Allison reported feeling remarkably better within days of the surgery, with her new kidney functioning well. While they've both experienced minor post-operative issues, such as Allison's hand and leg tremors, doctors are optimistic about their full recovery.
