House Democrats vs. Treasury Secretary: Fiery Hearing on Capitol Hill (2026)

"Can you silence him?" This was the heated question posed by House Democrats to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a contentious hearing on Capitol Hill that erupted into a series of loud confrontations and sharp exchanges.

At one point, Representative Maxine Waters from California, who serves as the leading Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, asked Chairman Rep. French Hill of Arkansas, "Can you shut him up?" This remark came as Bessent consistently interrupted her inquiries and disregarded her repeated attempts to reclaim the time for her questions.

In response to her frustration, Bessent retorted, "Can you maintain some level of dignity?"

The core of their back-and-forth dialogue centered on President Donald Trump’s tariffs, especially those affecting construction materials used in home building.

The purpose of this hearing was primarily to delve into the annual report from the Financial Stability Oversight Council, an entity responsible for assessing the stability of the U.S. financial system. However, throughout the session, several Democrats echoed Waters's insistence on reclaiming their time, indicating a growing sense of urgency and exasperation.

Tensions escalated further during a moment when Massachusetts Representative Stephen Lynch questioned Bessent about a slowdown in corporate investigations, pressing him on whether this posed any concern for the Secretary. As Bessent began shifting blame towards the Biden administration, Lynch interjected with, "Please answer my question directly."

Bessent defended his stance, saying, "I am, sir, but this back and forth is just eating into your time."

In an appeal to the committee's chairman, Lynch stated, "Mr. Chairman, we need responsive answers if this hearing is going to be taken seriously."

To which Bessent shot back, "Well, the questions have to be serious."

At various points, Chairman Hill had to remind Bessent to let the committee members use their designated time to speak.

During a segment focusing on whether the Treasury Department intended to utilize the Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFI) Fund—designed to spur economic growth in underserved areas—for housing initiatives, an intense exchange occurred between Ohio's Rep. Joyce Beatty and Bessent. When he failed to provide a straightforward yes or no response to her question, Beatty expressed her frustration, stating, "I'm trying to be respectful, but you’re not going to dictate how I use my time. Just give a simple answer: yes or no, or say, 'I won’t answer,' and I’ll move on."

In response, Bessent only offered, "Uh, number three."

Beatty shot back, "Let the record reflect that he refuses to answer the question," as she attempted to regain control of the conversation.

As Bessent began to interject again, Beatty firmly declared, "No, no, we’re not going to do that with me. We are not going to do that with me."

In another notable moment, Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York pressed Bessent about reports claiming that Trump’s cryptocurrency firm sold a $500 million stake to a member of the Emirati royal family shortly before Trump took office. He asked, "Will you halt this and conduct a thorough investigation into this application for licensing?"

Bessent responded by indicating that the agency overseeing such matters operates independently, before pivoting to inquire about Meeks’s own trip to Venezuela in 2006, where he allegedly lobbied on behalf of a donor.

Meeks perceived this as an evasion and retorted, "I take that as a no. You don't want to answer that question. I take that as a no..."

Bessent continued, trying to assert his point, "For 7 billion..."

As Hill pointed out that Meeks had exceeded his allotted time, Meeks fired back at Bessent, shouting, "Stop covering for the president. Don’t be a flunky. Work for the American people. Work for the American people. Don't serve as a cover-up for a mob."

At one juncture, Hill had to remind everyone about maintaining decorum in accordance with House rules.

In a surprising turn, Republican Rep. Andy Barr from Kentucky extended an apology to Bessent, suggesting, "What we’re uncovering from this hearing, Mr. Secretary, is how much Trump derangement syndrome threatens our emotional stability. Today has been filled with lectures aimed at you."

Democratic representatives expressed their disapproval of the tone set during the hearing. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver from Missouri remarked, "Regrettably, this hearing has been rather embarrassing," later adding, "I've come to realize that you can’t produce honey while also stinging. The pertinent question is whether our goal today was to sting or to address issues of national importance."

Rep. Juan Vargas from California opted to forgo his planned questions due to the behavior exhibited during the session. Turning to Hill, he stated, "Mr. Chairman, we’ve had some productive hearings recently. This was not one of them. Today is not your finest hour, and it’s unfortunate because I believe you are quite capable."
