A Fine Dining Journey Awaits
Nestled within Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, Napa Rose has long been a gateway for guests to explore the world of fine dining. The general manager, Nicholas Hockman, shared a fascinating insight: Napa Rose aims to create an elegant yet welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that guests feel at ease during their first fine dining adventure. And boy, did they deliver on that promise!
A Warm and Knowledgeable Team
The renovation, combined with the incredible Cast Members, truly embodies this vision. Despite not having visited Napa Rose in years, I instantly felt at home in its newly designed space. The warm hospitality and knowledgeable staff, like our server Wendy, who has been with the restaurant since its opening 25 years ago, made our experience truly special.
The Space: A Northern Californian Dream
Inspired by the Northern Californian Arts and Crafts tradition, the renovated space pays homage to the colors and textures of Napa Valley. From the beautiful chandelier modeled after the Mission Vine to the mural showcasing Napa Valley's vineyards, every detail adds to the warm and inviting atmosphere. The main dining room offers a four-course tasting menu, allowing guests to select from a variety of options for each course. For an exclusive experience, guests can dine at the Chef's Counter, which provides a unique view of the exhibition kitchen and accommodates up to 18 guests.
The newly renovated bar and lounge area offer a cozy ambiance with a new fireplace and alfresco dining on the outdoor patio. Here, guests can enjoy small plates, caviar, and seafood preparations, all designed to complement the extensive wine and cocktail programs.
A Refreshing Menu
The menu has been reimagined to showcase seasonal ingredients and an ingredient-driven philosophy. Nearly all components of the cocktails are prepared in-house, including tinctures, syrups, and cordials, each inspired by California's history and regional landmarks. The wine program is equally impressive, boasting over 13,000 bottles and 1,500 labels, including rare selections typically found only in private cellars.
Our meal began with an amuse-bouche, a Signature Mushroom Cappuccino, which set the tone for a delightful evening. The foam was savory and flavorful, and the mushroom broth beneath was rich and satisfying. This was followed by a light and flavorful Sauteéd Seasonal Fish with lobster toast and lemon bubble, and the American Wagyu N.Y., thinly sliced medium-rare with a grape mustardo, which was a harmonious blend of flavors.
The Sorpesine Pasta, with its California Crab broth and Pacific Uni, was paired perfectly with a crisp Chardonnay. For our entrées, we had the Sustainable Fish of the Day, a Swordfish with ancient grains and black lentils, which even impressed my fish-averse boyfriend. The Roasted Boneless Colorado Rack of Lamb was also a standout, perfectly cooked and seasoned with a delicious demi-glace.
But the real showstopper was the dessert: the Elevated and Reminiscent Valhrona Chocolate Bar with hazelnut praline. This chocolate-hazelnut cannoli was a fine dining take on a candy bar, and it left us wanting more. It was, without a doubt, one of the best desserts we've ever had!
Chef Andrew Sutton shared his passion for the reopening, stating, "Reopening Napa Rose feels deeply personal... We're working at the strongest level ever, with a menu and wine program shaped by craftsmanship, seasonality, and an international perspective."
The updated Napa Rose offers an exceptional dining experience, perfect for an intimate and upscale evening. While it may be on the pricier side, it's definitely worth considering for a special occasion or a luxurious dining experience.
