Delta Air Lines is expanding its Pacific reach, with a new nonstop route to Manila, Philippines, set to launch in 2027. This move comes as part of the airline's strategy to strengthen its presence in the region and cater to the growing demand for travel to South Pacific and Southeast Asian destinations. The LAX-MNL route will be Delta's first nonstop service between the U.S. mainland and the Philippines, offering SkyMiles loyalists an enticing new destination.
The airline's recent focus on long-haul routes from its Southern California hub, including flights to Hong Kong and Melbourne, Australia, highlights its commitment to expanding its transpacific network. Delta's chief commercial officer, Joe Esposito, emphasized the high demand for these destinations, citing Hong Kong and Melbourne as examples. This expansion aligns with the airline's goal of meeting customer needs and strengthening its position as a leading global carrier.
Interestingly, Delta's entry into the Philippines market is not entirely new. The airline previously operated fifth-freedom service to Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL) from Seoul and Tokyo's Narita Airport (NRT) before the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these routes were discontinued and have not returned. Now, Delta is returning to Manila with nonstop flights from the West Coast, becoming the second airline and the first U.S. carrier to link Los Angeles with MNL.
The addition of Manila to Delta's route network is significant for several reasons. Firstly, it provides travelers with more options for reaching the South Pacific destination using points and miles. With Delta joining forces with United Airlines, which already offers service to Manila from San Francisco International Airport (SFO), the competition in the market is intensifying. Secondly, the route will be operated with an Airbus A350-900, featuring up to 40 Delta One suites, enhancing the travel experience for customers.
This expansion also coincides with Delta's recent investment in its upscale Delta One Lounge at LAX, its second at the hub and the fifth in its network. The airline's focus on improving the customer experience and its growing presence in the Pacific region are key factors in its success and market leadership. As Delta continues to innovate and adapt to the evolving travel landscape, its strategic route additions and customer-centric approach will likely solidify its position as a leading global airline.
