Recently, former Formula 1 star Daniel Ricciardo made a special cameo appearance with the Red Bull team, engaging in a playful but competitive challenge alongside current star Max Verstappen and rookie driver Arvid Lindblad. The trio took on a series of racing tests, each involving a selection of 12 historic and modern cars spanning over a century of motorsport history. This event was not just about speed; it was about strategy, adaptation, and the thrill of competition.
The first task, called "Acceleration," set the scene with the drivers choosing their vehicles for a 250-meter drag race. Verstappen kicked things off by picking a Ford Fiesta from 2017, a car that won the World Rally Championship and boasts a top speed of approximately 124 mph with 380 horsepower. He warmed up the car for a few laps before lining up on the track, aiming to beat Ricciardo's best time of 6.96 seconds.
Lindblad, on the other hand, selected a classic muscle car—a 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302—featuring 290 horsepower and capable of reaching a top speed of about 137 mph. Struggling to get the hang of the vintage clutch, Lindblad posted a slower time of 14.78 seconds, illustrating how different car eras demand different driving skills.
Both drivers then switched to their second-choice cars for another run, upping the ante dramatically. Verstappen drove a futuristic 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Supertruck with an astonishing 2200 horsepower and a top speed of 190 mph, while Lindblad chose a vintage 1986 Ford RS200, with 450 horsepower and a top speed of around 139 mph.
In this round, Verstappen clocked an impressive 6.47 seconds, nearly a second faster than Lindblad's 8.37 seconds. Verstappen reflected on his choices, suggesting that in this type of challenge, he would be disappointed if his car selections didn't lead to victory—highlighting how powerful and advanced racing technology has become.
Adding a fun twist, Lindblad took a quirky bonus challenge—driving a 1924 Ford Model T around a circuit designed for cornering. His goal was to complete the lap in under three minutes to earn extra points that could tie the competition. After some effort, he finished in 2 minutes, 22.46 seconds, leveling the playing field.
Next up was "Cornering," where Verstappen and Lindblad showcased their skills in a more focused test of handling. Verstappen chose the newest model, the 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC, finishing a lap in 37.81 seconds. Lindblad responded with a 41.15-second lap in a classic 1966 Ford GT40 Mk2, demonstrating how different decades' designs affect lap times.
The final showdown was a head-to-head race where both drivers started simultaneously, each picking a car they hadn't used earlier to avoid repetition. Verstappen selected the 2026 Ford Australian Supercar, equipped with 600 horsepower, while Lindblad went with the 2025 Ford Mustang GT3, with 550 horsepower.
Just before the race, Ricciardo made a surprise appearance to encourage the young driver. He humorously commented on the clutch skills required for race cars and joked about the power of the cars, adding some lightheartedness to the intense competition.
In the heat of the race, Lindblad outperformed Verstappen. On the first lap, he posted a time of 1 minute 09.05 seconds, narrowly beating Verstappen’s 1 minute 11.23 seconds. The second lap saw Lindblad again take the lead, finishing at 1 minute 03.10 seconds compared to Verstappen’s 1 minute 06.29 seconds, ultimately making Lindblad the overall winner of this friendly yet fiercely contested challenge.
