China's Infiltration of US Healthcare: A National Security Threat (2026)

A former Trump administration official is warning of a critical national security threat within the US healthcare industry, with a particular focus on China's growing influence. The issue at hand is China's infiltration of American medical technology and the potential risks it poses to patient privacy and national security.

The Protecting America Initiative (PAI), a conservative nonprofit, has launched a campaign to highlight the nation's vulnerability to China in the medical technology sector. This comes after a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between four state attorneys general and the Federal Communications Commission Chairman, aiming to strengthen protections against Chinese infiltration in communications equipment and services.

The concern is not just about data privacy. It's about the potential for Chinese companies to manipulate medical devices, putting patient lives at risk. A recent case involved a popular brand of patient monitoring devices, which were found to have a 'backdoor' that allowed remote file downloads and potential data transmission to a Chinese university. All Chinese schools are required by law to support national intelligence work.

Former DHS Acting Secretary Chad Wolf, who served during the Trump administration, is leading the charge. He emphasizes the danger of relying on Chinese medical devices, as they can provide a gateway for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to access sensitive health data. Wolf calls for the removal of Chinese medical devices from US hospitals and the closure of data backdoors, prioritizing patient privacy and national security.

In June, Florida's Republican Attorney General took legal action against a Chinese medical device manufacturer, accusing them of selling compromised devices with backdoors that transmit patient data to China. This highlights the ongoing concern about China's expanding presence in American medical supply chains.

Experts, such as those from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD), a conservative think tank, warn that China's growing role in US medical device supply chains is a result of both Beijing's industrial policy and the evolving healthcare landscape. The NIH estimates that a significant percentage of US-imported pharmaceuticals and medical equipment comes from China, but this may be an understatement due to the complex nature of medical supply chains and China's dual role as a supplier and assembler.

The FDD argues that China has exploited the US's reliance on it by selling and exporting deliberately compromised technology, putting doctors and patients at risk. This situation raises serious questions about the security of patient treatment plans and the potential for unintended consequences.
