Cedric Mullins' New Chapter: Rays Sign Former Mets Outfielder (2026)

Bold move: Cedric Mullins is returning to the AL East, signing a one-year deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. The deal is reportedly worth $7 million, with multiple outlets confirming the agreement after initial reporting from the Tampa Bay Times and The Athletic.

Mullins spent most of his career in the Orioles' organization before being traded to the Mets at the 2025 deadline, in an effort to bolster New York’s outfield through the final stretch. That plan, however, didn’t play out as hoped.

In Queens, Mullins struggled at the plate, posting a slash line of .182/.284/.565 with two homers and 10 RBIs. He wasn’t able to lift the Mets’ offense from center field, a key area they needed to address as they pursued a playoff position.

As September drew to a close, Mullins acknowledged his disappointment with how his stint in New York unfolded. Speaking before Game 161 against the Marlins, he said he hadn’t lived up to his own expectations and that it was tough on him and his family to adjust to the realities of a midseason trade and the associated moves.

Over his career, Mullins has been recognized as an All-Star in 2021, totaling 103 home runs and a .736 OPS. He’s known for his above-average speed on the bases and solid defensive work in center field, finishing the previous season in the 87th percentile in outs above average according to MLB’s Statcast metrics.

This move brings Mullins back to a familiar division and provides the Rays with another veteran contributor who can impact both outfield defense and lineup depth. Whether Mullins can recapture his earlier form remains to be seen, but the change of scenery could offer the spark both he and Tampa Bay are seeking.

Discussion questions: Do you think Mullins’ elite speed and defense will translate into strong performance in a fresh environment with Tampa Bay? Could the change of organization be the rejuvenating factor he needs to bounce back? Share your thoughts below.
