Basso's Palta III: Revolutionizing the Gravel Bike Market
In a bold move, Basso has unveiled the Palta III, a gravel bike that aims to shake up the fragmented market. But is it just another bike, or a game-changer? Let's dive in and find out!
The Palta, meaning 'mud' in the local Veneto dialect, has been a staple in the gravel bike scene since its debut in 2018. Our reviews of the Palta and its successor, the Palta II, praised their speed and performance, even against the best gravel bikes on the market. But what sets the Palta III apart?
Basso is addressing a common dilemma in the gravel bike world: the trade-off between race performance and adventure capabilities. They claim to have found the sweet spot with the Palta III, offering a blend of performance and versatility.
But here's where it gets interesting: The Palta III not only looks the part but also delivers on its promise. It maintains the race-ready spirit of its predecessors while allowing riders to conquer technical off-road trails. This balance is a dream come true for gravel enthusiasts.
The market already has gravel bikes that achieve this, but Basso takes it a step further. They empower riders to define their own blend of performance and versatility by providing a capable platform and letting them customize components. And this is the part most brands miss!
The Palta III's frame is crafted with Torayca carbon fibers, and Basso has managed to reduce the weight, with a Medium frame weighing just 970 grams. They also claim an 18% reduction in 'frontal aerodynamic impact area', thanks to optimized tube shapes. This means a more efficient ride, especially in windy conditions.
Basso has also focused on stiffness, increasing it in the bottom bracket and rear triangles while decreasing it in the headtube for better vibration damping. The frame accommodates 52mm and 50mm tire clearances, front and rear, respectively, and comes with 45mm Continental and Pirelli tires as standard.
One standout feature is the Microtech Solid Oil headset bearings, which promise triple the durability and better resistance to washout, a bonus for those riding in dusty or muddy conditions.
Basso's unique 3B Clamp system at the seatpost uses anti-vibration technology to reduce rider fatigue. Additionally, the shorter seat tube design increases seatpost exposure, further enhancing compliance.
Mounting options are plentiful, with points on the top and underside of the top tube, and the downtube. While mudguard mounts are absent, this might not be a deal-breaker for many gravel riders.
Basso offers three handlebar options for the Palta III, catering to different rider preferences. The Fuga, an integrated carbon bar and stem, offers a 6-degree flare and a 400mm width at the drops. The Levita, another integrated handlebar, provides width choices from 380-440mm with a 4-degree flare. Lastly, the Strato is a separate bar and stem combo, featuring an alloy stem and carbon handlebar, allowing for thicker bar tape without compromising looks.
The Palta III comes in six sizes, with a high stack and sloping toptube for better fit. The Medium size boasts a stack of 570mm and a reach of 373mm.
A notable feature is the Vibram rubber downtube protector, designed to safeguard the frame and absorb impact energy.
The Palta III will be available in three stunning colorways: Purple Dust, Carbon Chrome, and Galaxy Dream. Riders can customize their cockpit, seatpost setback, groupset, and wheels. The frame accommodates both mechanical and electronic groupsets, and all bikes come with a five-year warranty.
You can choose between a frameset or five different builds, featuring SRAM Red and Force XPLR, Shimano GRX 1X and 2X 820, and a 2x12 GRX 825 model. Top-spec bikes include Zipp 303 XPLR wheels, while others feature Microtech and Fulcrum rims.
Prices start at €3,299 / $4,795 for the frameset, including headset, seatpost, and Strato handlebar. Builds range from €4,299 / $5,995 for a GRX 820 1X12 to €8,499 / $10.995 for the top-of-the-line Red AXS XPLR model.
For the UK market, three gravel builds are available, priced at £5399, £4699, and £3999, respectively.
Controversy Alert: Is the Palta III truly a revolutionary gravel bike, or is it just another player in a crowded market? What do you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below! And remember, the best gravel bike is the one that suits your unique riding style and preferences.
