Angola's Bold Move: Protecting Girls from Cervical Cancer
In a groundbreaking initiative, Angola has embarked on an ambitious public health campaign to combat cervical cancer, one of the leading causes of death among women of reproductive age in the country. This campaign, centered around the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, aims to shield over two million girls aged 9 to 12 from this deadly disease.
But here's where it gets controversial: cervical cancer is preventable, yet it claims the lives of thousands of Angolan women annually. WHO estimates reveal a grim reality - over 2,000 new cases each year, with a devastating 50% mortality rate. However, the HPV vaccine, endorsed by the WHO, offers a glimmer of hope, providing protection against the most common types of HPV responsible for cervical cancer.
To achieve this monumental task, Angola has mobilized an impressive 1,667 teams from the Expanded Program on Immunization. These teams will reach out to public and private schools, health facilities, and communities, ensuring that 70% of eligible girls receive the vaccine free of charge. The vaccine, administered in a single dose as per WHO guidelines, acts as a shield against a disease that should not be allowed to take lives.
This campaign positions Angola as a leader in the Global Strategy for the Elimination of Cervical Cancer, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals and Universal Health Coverage. Dr. Tomás Valdez, WHO Acting Representative, emphasized the significance of each dose, calling it "a victory against the disease, an investment in the future, and protection for Angolan families."
The official launch in Namibe province was a historic moment. Diego Zorrilla, Acting Resident Coordinator of the United Nations, praised Angola's initiative, stating, "Angola is taking a bold step to protect its girls and ensure a healthier future."
This vaccination campaign is the culmination of 16 years of dedicated preparation and mobilization, involving a diverse range of stakeholders, from national authorities to health partners, civil society, and the private sector. Health Minister Dr. Sílvia Lutucuta expressed the significance of this joint effort, saying, "Today, we realize the dream of protecting young Angolan women against cervical cancer."
Leading this campaign is the First Lady of the Republic, Dr. Ana Dias Lourenço, who acts as the national ambassador, ensuring that no girl is left behind. Her role is pivotal in mobilizing institutions, leaders, and communities to achieve this ambitious goal.
HPV vaccination is a critical component of the WHO's global strategy to eradicate cervical cancer as a public health problem by 2030. This strategy aims to ensure that 90% of girls are vaccinated before the age of 15, 70% of women undergo screening for early detection, and 90% of diagnosed women receive appropriate treatment.
In this collaborative effort, the WHO has played a key role in supporting the Government of Angola. They have conducted studies on socio-behavioral factors influencing vaccine acceptance, developed communication and community engagement strategies, and prepared microplans, manuals, and guidance documents to ensure effective implementation.
The mission is clear: inform, mobilize, and act to vaccinate all girls, everywhere. WHO calls on parents, teachers, community leaders, journalists, and influencers to spread accurate messages and encourage vaccination.
